Our approach to addiction recovery and well-being is rooted in holistic practices. We understand that healing is not just about addressing the physical, but also about nurturing the mind and spirit. Sitali Breathing is one of the many tools we advocate for, helping our clients find balance and serenity in their lives.

Kirstin Gourlay, our esteemed Psychoeducation Facilitator, beautifully introduces and guides this practice in two insightful videos.

The first video offers a comprehensive introduction, while the second provides a step-by-step guided walkthrough.

We invite you to watch, learn, and immerse yourself in this rejuvenating experience.

How It Works

  1. Positioning: Sit in a comfortable position, keeping your spine straight and shoulders relaxed.
  2. The Sitali Breath: Curl your tongue into a "U" shape. Inhale deeply through your curled tongue, feeling the cool air passing over it. Close your mouth and exhale completely through your nostrils. This completes one cycle.
  3. Duration: Start with a few minutes and gradually increase the duration as you become more comfortable with the practice.

Watch the video below to follow Kirstin through the entire process.

In Closing

While Sitali Breathing is a powerful tool, it's essential to remember that every individual's journey is unique. What works wonders for one might not resonate as strongly with another. At Miracles Asia, we encourage exploration and finding what resonates with you. After all, the path to recovery and well-being is deeply personal.

In a world that often feels chaotic, finding pockets of peace can make all the difference. Sitali Breathing is a testament to the simple yet profound ways in which we can reclaim our calm. Whether you're a former client reconnecting with us or someone new seeking solace, we hope this practice brings you moments of tranquility and clarity.

Remember, good things are always on the horizon. Sometimes, all it takes is a deep breath to see them.

3 Easy Breaths to Bring Back Balance https://miraclesasia.com/3-easy-breaths-to-bring-back-balance/ Fri, 22 Jul 2022 01:13:38 +0000 https://miraclesasia.com/?p=16872 Your breathing patterns do create a connection between the emotional body and the physical body.

When we are angry, anxious or dealing with a stressful situation you know your breath becomes faster and shallower.

When we are calm and relaxed our breath slows down and becomes deeper.

You don’t need to do any breathwork training to be able to effectively and efficiently use your breath to help shift yourself out of emotional states that are not serving you.

Below are a few very simple, easy to follow guides for three breathing exercises.

Your breathing patterns do create a connection between the emotional body and the physical body.

Try each of them, and see which one works best for you.

Then start bringing it into your daily practice.

All you need is two minutes in the morning, or at night before bed.

If you practice these regularly then you'll begin train your muscle memory and build the neuro pathways that allow you to do them at times when you really in need of them.

Deep Belly Breathing

Find a comfortable seated position with your spine straight.

You may want to sit on a chair, or have a cushion for support.

You may be more comfortable lying down.

Find whatever works best for you.

Then allow the eyelids to relax and close your eyes.

Start to notice your breath.

Notice when you are inhaling.

Notice when you are exhaling.

And then bring the awareness to your belly and relax all the muscles around your belly.

Let it all hang out....

On the next inhale draw the breath all the way down into the belly and feel it expand like a balloon.

As you exhale, draw the navel to the spine and allow the whole breath to leave the body.

Continue breathing in this way, filling the belly on the inhale and emptying the belly on the exhale for three minutes and just notice the effect it has on your mind and body.

Left Nostril Breathing

The left nostril is connected to the right hemisphere of the brain.

During meditation this is the part of the brain that is activated while the left hemisphere, which is the analytical, logical part of the brain, becomes less active.

Find a comfortable seated position and allow the left hand to rest on the leg or in the lap.

Bring the right hand up and using the thumb, gently block off the right nostril.

Start to breathe slowly and deeply through the left nostril only.

There is no force or effort here, just long, slow deep breaths.

Find a rhythm that feels good for you and then continue for three minutes.

Sit afterwards with your eyes closed, and just notice how this experience has been for you.

Box Breathing

Find a comfortable seated or lying position.

Close the eyes or allow the eyelids to relax.

Start to bring your awareness to your breath and for now just notice the inhale. And then exhale.

On the next inhale relax all the muscles around the belly, and start to count.

Inhale for a count of four.

Hold the breath for a count of four.

Exhale for a count of four.

Pause for a count of four.

And then continue in the same rhythm.

Keep going for three minutes.

Sit in stillness for a little while after and just notice how this was for you.

A Practical Guide to The Addiction Cycle https://miraclesasia.com/a-practical-guide-to-the-addiction-cycle/ Thu, 21 Jul 2022 04:39:56 +0000 https://miraclesasia.com/?p=16807 They say that there are two types of knowledge.

First, there is Head Knowledge, where we intellectually understand the concept of something.

This is the knowing of it....

Second there is Heart Knowledge where that mental concept drops into our heart, and here there is a faith, a trust that allows the learning to drop more deeply into our being.

This is where the Ah-ha! moments are....

When a dear friend, and counsellor took me through the following exercise I experienced the concept of the addiction cycle dropping from my head into my heart.

They say that there are two types of knowledge.

It became something I could more viscerally see, feel and understand.

It was one of those Ah-ha! moments for me, and I would like to share it with you.

So, go get a piece of paper and a pen.

Got them? Great, let's start with some definitions....

What is addiction?

For the purpose of what we are doing today we are going to use my favorite definition which is:

“... any behavior we continue to do, despite knowing that it brings negative consequences to our lives.”

This could be drinking, drugging, shopping, gaming, watching porn, overeating, working too much……

Take your pick of whatever behavior you can think of.

So, from here you can quickly define what your Drug of Choice (DOC) is…

For example: alcohol, food, sex, spending, work, porn, pot, cocaine...

Take your pick, and write it down.

Now we move onto the next step.

What is a disease?

The simplest definition of disease is something in the body that causes the systems to malfunction.

No matter which behavior we are examining, from drinking to compulsive overeating, workaholism to gaming, these are all due to system malfunctions.

Left unchecked like any other disease in the body there will be critical consequences.

Next is the Allergy concept

For the sake of simplicity let’s just say that an allergy in this context is an abnormal reaction to your particular DOC.

Then we have Obsession

This is all about the thinking. It’s in the head. It’s an idea that overpowers all other ideas.

A persistent preoccupation with an often unreasonable or irrational idea.

And finally, we have Compulsion

This is when you have an irresistible impulse to perform a behavior. So, its a physiological response.

For example, once you have your DOC, a substance to which you have an allergy is taken into your body, your mind is no longer in control.

You are unable to resist. Another way to think of compulsion is that feeling like something is completely irresistible.

Now the fun can start!

Take your pen and draw a circle on your piece of paper, like a large clock.

Put four marks around the circle at twelve o’clock, three o’clock, six o’clock and nine o’clock.

And now divide those points in half again.

At the top, at the twelve o’clock mark write the word FEELINGS.

This is the starting point for the cycle of addiction.

These feelings can be positive or negative.

When we look in the Big Book (the nickname for the 12-Step basic textbook called ‘Alcoholics Anonymous’) at the chapter called ‘The Doctor’s Opinion’, we see RESTLESS, IRRITABLE and DISCONTENT.

Remembering what it says on page 23 and page 64 of the Big Book, that using our DOC is the symptom of a greater, deeper problem – that it’s not the problem.

At the next mark, at about one thirty on the clock, write the word MEMORY.

Something either conscious or unconscious, way deep in the brain, also known as the disease, speaks. It sends a message of some memory of feeling better, some memory of an altered mood from using, or ‘picking up’ your DOC.

This can be instantaneous, it can happen in a microsecond, but it happens if we have this disease, and it sends the memory message to us.

Go on down to the three o’clock point and write the word OBSESSION.

Now the obsession begins and that obsession is an idea that overpowers all other ideas. This is where The Big Lie is.

Write those words there too.

We tell ourselves things like....

“It’ll be OK this time. I’ll just have one this time”.

What happens with the obsession is that it crowds out the memory of all of the pain that we’ve suffered from this problem, as well as crowding out all of the resolutions that we might have made.

This obsession crowds out all the promises we might have made to ourselves or to others.

And so, The Big Lie begins.

There is an argument in our head – “to do, or not to do”.

More often than not, for most people the “to do” side wins, which takes us to the next point on the clock, the four thirty point.

Write in here ‘The First ………… (swig, toke, bite, click or whatever fits for your particular DOC).

At this point we have given in with some kind of rationalization of “Just one”.

This is COMPULSION.

Come to the six o’clock point on the clock and write CRAVING for MORE BEGINS.

We are at the place of physiological response; the body is responding and it’s doing so by wanting more.

It can be more right now or it can be more a little bit later, but quite often for many of us it’s more right NOW!

Let’s keep going to the next point at the seven-thirty mark and write the word BINGE.

So here we are in it!

We are using and we are out of control.....

Write that down next to BINGE, write OUT OF CONTROL BEHAVIOUR.

And remember this could be with food, it could be with alcohol or any other substance or action.

Here our definition of addiction is

Any behavior which we continue to do despite it bringing negative consequences to our lives”.

Keep going around the clock to the nine o’clock point and write the word REMORSE.

Remorse, regret, guilt. Put them all up there....

This is what you feel when you eventually do stop.

Go up to the ten thirty point and write RESOLUTIONS. Resolutions and PROMISES.

It usually goes something like this....

“How could I have done that? I will never do that again!”.

Here we are promising ourselves that we will no longer do it, and we may well not do it for a while.

At least until we get back up to the top part of the circle again where the feelings like restless, irritable and discontent come back.

We have a disease and if we haven’t done anything to arrest the process of it, we will always come back up to this point again.

It may not be immediately, it may not even be for a month or a year, but we will always come back to the start of this cycle.

We are going to keep going around and around and around this cycle, with this clock like a dead weight round our necks, getting us deeper and deeper into the pits of the disease.

And it all starts with the anger, the fear, the loneliness, masquerading as the hunger and obsession for our DOC.

Until we can break this cycle or some power greater than us can break this cycle, we are not getting out of it.

So, we are back to that first step…….

You have a disease over which willpower is useless.

No amount of willpower can get us out of this disease.

We make all the promises, and resolutions up there at the ten thirty point but cannot keep them.

When those feelings come, we are in it again…….and again.

So, as with any process of change, this is the First Step...

By admitting I have a problem, AND I have an awareness that I cannot solve it by myself.
